Say the word, then say it in separate sounds, putting a finger in a box for each one. Then write a letter in each box. One box is one sound, which is not always one letter — fish is four letters and three sounds.
Sound it out
Every word here has three sounds. cup — c·u·p and sun — s·u·n use one letter per box. fish — f·i·sh, leaf — l·ea·f, boat — b·oa·t and moon — m·oo·n each have one box holding two letters.
If a child writes one letter per sound and gets fish as f-i-s-h, that is not a mistake to correct hard — it is exactly the moment to introduce the word digraph.
