For each job, say what material you would use and give the property that makes it right. The because is the whole answer — “metal” on its own is not.
A window
A raincoat
A saucepan
A bicycle helmet
Which material, and why?
Glass — transparent, so light gets through. Plastic or coated fabric — waterproof. Metal — conducts heat and does not melt. Hard plastic and foam — hard outside to spread a blow, soft inside to slow it down.
Alberta adds two words to suitability: availability and sustainability. A brilliant material nobody can get, or one that cannot keep being made, is not the right answer either.
