Line the ruler up with the start of each line, not with the end of the ruler, and read where it stops. Starting at the wrong place is the classic error and worth catching here.

4 cm, 7 cm, 11 cm, 6 cm, 9 cm.
Cut the ruler out along the top edge if you would rather use it than a real one. A real ruler is better, because lining up the zero is the part being learnt.
