Aim for an answer in about a second. Anything slower is a fact worth practising rather than a question worth working out, and knowing which ones are slow is the useful part.

Both are 24. Turning the array on its side is why 4 × 6 and 6 × 4 give the same answer, which halves the number of facts that have to be learnt — and it is a reason rather than a rule.

Times tables

12, 42, 64, 36, 42, 81, 40, 36, 56, 28, 54, 24, 49, 72, 56, 54. Three pairs are in here twice: 6 × 7 and 7 × 6, 7 × 8 and 8 × 7, 9 × 6 and 6 × 9. Noticing that they give the same answer is worth more than getting all sixteen right.
