A pizza is cut into 8 slices. Maya eats 3 and her brother eats 2. What fraction did they eat together, and what fraction is left?

Adding fractions

5/7; 2/8 (or 1/4); 7/5 = 1 2/5; 5/10 (or 1/2); 10/6 = 1 4/6 (or 1 2/3); 4/12 (or 1/3). Conversions: 7/4 = 1 3/4; 13/5 = 2 3/5; 2 1/3 = 7/3; 3 2/5 = 17/5. Pizza: 3/8 + 2/8 = 5/8 eaten, and 8/8 − 5/8 = 3/8 left — the whole pizza is 8/8, which is the step that makes the second question work.

Simplifying — 2/8 to 1/4 — is a nice extra but not the Grade 5 outcome. What matters is that 3/8 + 2/8 is 5/8 and never 5/16.
