About this course
Alberta's Math 9 has four strands: number, patterns and relations, shape and space, and statistics and probability. They are split here into nine units in the order most Grade 9 classes teach them, and together they cover every outcome.
Every Grade 9 student writes the provincial achievement test in June. Part A is twenty questions with no calculator — square roots, exponent laws, and arithmetic with fractions and negatives — which is why those units are worth making automatic rather than just understood. Part B is forty questions with a calculator, most of them set in real situations.
Math 10C picks almost all of this up and assumes it. The exponent laws are extended to negative and fractional exponents, multiplying by a monomial grows into multiplying and factoring polynomials, and a linear relation becomes slope and y = mx + b.
Outcomes come from Alberta Education's Mathematics Kindergarten to Grade 9 Program of Studies. A new Grade 7–9 math curriculum is being piloted in some classrooms in 2026–27; this follows the one most Grade 9 classes, and the achievement test, use now.
