For each situation, write one thing an upstander could do. Telling an adult always counts. Having a plan ready is what makes it possible to act at the time.
A classmate keeps taking another child's lunch every day.
I could
A group chat is sharing a mean picture of someone.
I could
Someone is left out of a game again, on purpose.
I could
Who is an adult I could tell at school?
Who is an adult I could tell at home?
For the grown-up
Be an upstander
Good answers include: tell an adult; stay with or include the person being picked on; do not laugh, share or add to it; say “that's not okay” if it feels safe. For the group chat, not forwarding it and telling an adult are both upstander moves — a screenshot to show an adult is fine; passing it on is not.
Alberta's outcome says everyone has the right to a bully-free environment. Framing it as a right makes telling an adult a way of protecting it, not tattling.
