Work from the left: how many 4s in 15? Write it on top, multiply, subtract, bring the next digit down. The last one does not come out even — the leftover is the remainder.
263 cookies go into boxes of 4. How many boxes are full, and how many cookies are left?
Dividing by one digit
39, 57, 105, 91, 45, 65 R3. For the cookies: 65 full boxes and 3 left over. 525 ÷ 5 has a zero in the middle of the answer (105), because 5 does not go into 2 — writing that zero is the step people skip.
What the remainder means depends on the question. 263 cookies in boxes of 4 make 65 full boxes; 263 children in cars of 4 need 66 cars. Asking which one makes sense is worth more than the arithmetic.
