Each clear evening for two weeks, draw the Moon's shape in a box and write the date. The pattern that appears is one of the oldest calendars people have.

The lit part grows night by night towards a full Moon, then shrinks — the whole cycle takes about a month, which is where the word month comes from. The Moon itself does not change shape; we see different amounts of its sunlit half. Other ways: the Sun gives day, night and the seasons; satellites give weather forecasts and phone maps; the northern lights come from particles sent out by the Sun.
Clouds will spoil some nights, and that is fine — gaps in data are normal, and noticing what can still be worked out without them is part of Alberta's evidence outcome.
