The fur trade

First Nations: furs, especially beaver; food such as pemmican; canoes; knowledge of routes, rivers and the land. Europeans: metal kettles, knives and axes, guns, cloth and blankets, beads. Beaver fur made the best felt for hats, which were fashionable in Europe. The Métis grew out of the fur trade. Changes include new tools, new trade rivalries and alliances, and diseases that killed many people; a good answer can be about gains or losses, as long as it says which.

Alberta's overview frames this unit around the relationships among First Nations, Métis and Europeans. The last question has no single answer on purpose — it is the one worth talking through.
