The provincial achievement tests
Alberta students write achievement tests in Grade 6 and Grade 9. Everything on this site that prepares you for one is below, free, with no account and nothing to sign up for.
Grade 9 — January and June
Semestered schools write in January; everyone else writes in June. 327 practice questions across the three subjects, each with the answer and the reason.
Math 9
Part A is twenty questions with no calculator and no options — you work the answer out and enter it. Part B is forty with a calculator.
126 questions, every one explained.
Science 9
Fifty-five questions, eleven from each of the five units, and 60% of them test skills rather than recall.
105 questions, every one explained.
English 9
Half reading and half writing. The reading half is 55 questions on ten short texts you have never seen.
96 questions, every one explained.
Grade 6 — June
The first year Alberta students write them, and three of the four learning areas are tested. The Grade 6 page has the dates, the length of each paper and what is on it.
Mathematics
Two parts, and no calculator on either.
English language arts
Two parts, each worth half: writing, then reading.
Science
Fifty questions, often grouped around one real situation.
Where to start
If the test is weeks away, work a unit at a time and read the explanation on every question you get wrong — that is where the marks are. If it is days away, build a mixed quiz and print a sheet: the printables have the answer key on its own page, so you can put the screen away.
Formats, weightings and dates come from Alberta Education and Childcare's bulletins for the current school year, and are repeated on each course page beside the content they describe.
