About this course
Grade 8 English has no set text list, so these units are organized around what you are asked to do. The first four are about reading — why characters act as they do, how a writer creates mood and theme, and how point of view and media shape what you see. The last three are about writing: sentences and punctuation, research, and revising a draft until it does what you meant.
There is no provincial test in Grade 8. But the habits here are the ones the Grade 9 achievement test checks: reading for evidence, explaining a writer's choices, and writing with a clear plan.
Because you choose what you read in class, nothing here depends on a particular novel or play, and every passage in the questions was written for this site. Outcomes come from Alberta Education's English Language Arts Kindergarten to Grade 9 Program of Studies.
