About this course
Alberta's Science 8 has five units, and they are used here exactly as they are: mix and flow of matter; cells and systems; light and optical systems; mechanical systems; and freshwater and saltwater systems.
Most of the year is about systems — a body made of cells, tissues and organs; a machine made of gears and levers; a watershed made of rivers, lakes and glaciers — and about the quantities that describe them, such as density, pressure and mechanical advantage. Many questions here give you a situation or a small experiment to reason about rather than a fact to recall.
There is no provincial test in Grade 8. Science 9 builds on this, and the Grade 9 achievement test is 60% reasoning of exactly this kind.
