Build a model where 1 astronomical unit (AU) is 50 cm. Multiply each planet's distance from the Sun by 50 to get its distance in the model. Earth is done for you.

A — orbits Earth — for weather, maps and communication

B — a Canadian-built robotic arm on the International Space Station

C — collects light to see things too far or faint for our eyes

D — drives across another planet's surface, testing rocks and soil

E — flies to distant planets and sends back pictures and measurements

Mercury 19.5 cm; Venus 36 cm; Earth 50 cm; Mars 76 cm; Jupiter 260 cm; Saturn 477 cm; Uranus 959.5 cm; Neptune 1503.5 cm. Neptune is about 15 m away — the four inner planets all fit within the first metre. Tools: Telescope C; Rover D; Space probe E; Satellite A; Canadarm2 B.

Walking the model out in a long hallway or a schoolyard is the best part: the inner planets are crowded together at the start, and then the gaps get enormous.
