Unit 1
Unit A: Mix and flow of matter
What fluids are made of and how they behave: mixtures and solutions, how much of a solid will dissolve, why syrup pours slowly and oil floats on water, what pressure is, and the technologies that move fluids, from pipelines to the oil sands.
Unit 2
Unit B: Cells and systems
Why the cell is the basic unit of life: plant and animal cells under the microscope, how water and gases move in and out of them, how cells build tissues, organs and body systems, and how the body responds to exercise, danger and disease.
Unit 3
Unit C: Light and optical systems
What light is and how we see: why light travels in straight lines, how mirrors reflect it and lenses bend it to form images, and how the eye, the camera and the microscope all use the same few ideas.
Unit 4
Unit D: Mechanical systems
How machines make a job easier, though never less work: levers, pulleys and ramps, how gears trade speed for force, work in joules and a machine's efficiency, and how a hydraulic jack lets a small push lift a car.
