Unit 1
Unit 1: Reading for meaning
Finding the point of a passage, reading what it shows but never says, and working out a new word from the words around it. Every answer starts with something you can point to.
Unit 2
Unit 2: How stories work
Conflict, the turning point, why characters do what they do, and who is telling the story. A narrator can only tell you what they know, and that shapes everything you read.
Unit 3
Unit 3: Poetry and figurative language
Comparisons that make you see something in a new way, the sounds and rhythms that carry a poem, and the shapes poems come in, from haiku to poems shaped like their subject.
Unit 4
Unit 4: Nonfiction and media
How headings, indexes and structure help you find what you need, the tricks ads use to change your mind, and how to tell a fact from an opinion and a reliable source from a weak one.
Unit 5
Unit 5: Sentences and conventions
Parts of speech, complete sentences, and the commas, apostrophes and quotation marks that make writing easy to follow. Every question uses a real sentence, because that is where the mistakes happen.
Unit 6
Unit 6: Writing a story
Planning a story around one problem, showing what characters feel instead of announcing it, and writing dialogue that sounds like real people and is set out correctly.
